Some words about Cabarete:
Cabarete is a little town on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. Looking out to the Atlantic Ocean, this was a very small place, untouched by tourism until the early 1990's. Now, it is a fast developing town, frequented by a mixture of middle aged folk, escaping the Canadian and European winters and young people, there for the surfing & partying and families. In 2006 the government, supported by local businesses, imported tons of white sand to lay over the dark stuff. So now we have white sand, just like the East coast... What we also have is large rolling waves, so if you are looking for the traditional blue 'Caribbean Ocean' with white sands, Cabarete rarely provides that, because the sand is being churned up all the time. If you really want those white sands and blue sea, go to the east coast... Cabarete is for fun! The east of the bay (to the right as you look at the sea) is much safer for little people. There is a natural reef that breaks the waves before they get near to the shore. Here the water is calmer and it gets deeper more slowly. To the west, the sands shift and it can be easy to get out of your depth if you aren't careful. Clearly you need to check before you let children play, things have a habit of changing when the sea is involved but generally you can be safe at the end. In the middle areas, it depends on the general conditions, sometimes calm, sometimes rolling waves (which are great fun for 'boogie boarding'). So if you want to sit under a coconut tree and read a book then you can do that (make sure you've got travel insurance! Trust me, you don't want to rely upon the public health system if a nut falls on your head) If you want to fly on the winds, you can do that. Surfing? A few miles outside Cabarete's main centre. Wind surfing? Check! Just playing in the water, sure just choose where on the bay the conditions suit you most. Head out on trips? Loads of them to keep you amused. Or just sit by your pool... you can do that too.
