The Old Chapel, perfect for romantics and perfect for unwinding. Although named 'The Old Chapel', the property has also been called 'The Meeting Rooms'. The cottage is situated in the Forest of Dean, an area of incredible natural beauty. The Forest of Dean covers approx 24,000 acres, and lies between the Rivers Severn and Wye, making it quite isolated from the rest of England and Wales. As a result the Forest has developed a character all of its own with a unique culture, and even its own dialect. The forest has an almost magical and mystical quality to it, and has inspired some of the country's great writers such as Tolkien, JK Rowling and Dennis Potter. The Forest was designated the first National Forest Park in 1938; it is the largest oak forest in England and a perfect place to escape from the frenetic pace of everyday life.

The cottage is situated up a small lane, the 3rd of only 4 properties just on the edge of the village of Yorkley (approx 400 inhabitants). There are extensive forest views immediately to the front and left of the cottage, and walking can commence just 4 metres from our front door! During the summer the view outside the cottage is absolutely beautiful. Parking is available just in front of the cottage.

Most of the accommodation in the chapel is on the ground floor, making it suitable for people who find stairs difficult to negotiate, although it is not suitable for wheelchair users.

The lounge/dining room measures approx 5m x 10m (16' x 30') and has pine-clad walls and very high pine ceilings. There is a wood-burning fire, a gothic chandelier and a large 42" flat screen TV with digital channels. All you can see when you sit on the settee next to the woodburner is forest. There is also a utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer. The bathroom consists of a bath, wash-hand basin, toilet, bidet and walk-in shower. The kitchen is small but very well equipped with dishwasher, slow cooker and Bosch oven and hob. There is also a fridge-freezer. The first double bedroom is next to the lounge, and the second bedroom is situated up a pine staircase in a gallery which overlooks the lounge; this room has high pine-clad ceilings and lots of pine ballustrading; but it could be dangerous for young children. The floors throughout are mostly natural wood.

The cottage is very well furnished, with everything you might need for your holiday; a real 'home from home'.

Apart from the forest itself, you have easy access (one hour's drive or less) to the following towns: Gloucester, Chepstow Bath, Bristol, Cheltenham, Birmingham and Cardiff and we are only 5 miles away from the beautiful Wye Valley.

We love it here; we find it is just the the perfect place to relax.

The Royal Forest of Dean is approximately 120 miles west of London (via the M4), 65 miles from Birmingham (via the M5), and approximately 35 miles from Bristol to the centre of the forest. It is also 12 miles from the Welsh border and 5 miles to the beautiful Wye Valley, an area of outstanding natural beauty. Birmingham International Airport, a gateway to Europe and the USA is within 90 minutes driving distance.

We stayed at The Old Chapel in May 2009 and even though the weather was awful (we woke up to rain on a daily basis) we had an absolutely fantastic time. There is so much to do in the local area that you could keep yourselves busy for two weeks solid and we actually ran out of time to do things - even with all the rain. We would highly recommend mountain biking at Pedalabikeaway in particular.

As far as the accommodation is concerned, when the owners say The Old Chapel is relaxing, they really mean it. The place is relaxation personified with an abundance of candles and the log burner.

Overall an absolutely fantastic holiday.

My husband and I stayed in The Old Chapel in January for a much needed post Christmas break. We were looking for a nice place to stay in the countryside where we could get away from it all but also somewhere where there were things to do during the day. The Old Chapel definitely hit the spot! If you walk out of the French doors, turn left and carry on walking for 20 seconds you will be right in the Forest of Dean. We went on lots of walks and also went to Go Ape, a course of varying levels of wires and ropes which is about a 10 minute drive away and lots of fun (even if you do ache a bit the next day!). There is also horse riding nearby (we didn't go though as my husband isn't keen on riding) and a local pub within walking distance which serves decent food in the evenings.

The chapel itself is beautiful; very tasteful decor and furniture and well equipped (e.g. the kitchen has a dishwasher and they have a BBQ in the shed for BBQ's in the patio garden in the warmer months). It is very homely (not stale like some of the other self- catering places we have stayed at). There is also an open fire which was very inviting and made for a really cosy atmosphere in the evenings (we went during the cold spell) and two huge cream sofas.

All in all the Chapel is the perfect place for a relaxing weekend break; whether you're looking for a romantic break or a weekend away with friends. We would highly recommend it and have already made a booking for a return trip in the summer!
